Year 1 and 2 2025 - 2026
We are using computer software to create our own storybooks.The Year 1/2 team is Mr Branskey, Mrs Walsh, Mrs Curzon and Mrs Markham.

What will we be learning in the Summer Term?

English
In English, we will be looking at the story of The Secret of Black Rock by Joe Todd-Stanton. We will write the beginning of the story and innovate it by changing the character. After that we will write a report about a sea animal. We will be focusing on using the correct sentence punctuation and improving our handwriting.
Maths
Year 1
We will start the term by completing our learning on addition and subtraction facts within 10 before moving on to composition of number from 11 to 20.
Year 2
We will start the term looking at 3D shapes. Then we will look at adding and subtracting multiples of 10.
Science
Our science topic will be looking at plants. We will learn key vocabulary so we can name the parts of a flowering plant. We will make observations about what we can find on our school grounds.
History
In History our focus is on the history of art. We will look at a range of paintings and establish what they can tell us about the past. We will look at how life has changed since the artists were alive. In the second half of the term, we will focus on the work of Lowry.
RE
In RE, the children will learn that Judaism is a world religion. They will be able to name features of a synagogue and understand why it is an important place for Jews. The children will look at special events that are celebrated and what they mean, such as Shabbat.
PE
We will be developing our skills in net and wall games and striking and fielding games.
Computing
We are using computer software to create our own storybooks.
Art
This term we will be looking at the work of Frida Kahlo and focusing on her use of symbolism in her portraits. We will learn how to draw a portrait and use watercolours.
Reading
In reading, we will be improving our comprehension skills and increasing the children’s reading mileage. We will be encouraging the children to read more and share their favourite books/ authors with the other children in class.
It is especially important this year, that children are heard read regularly. Please put a note in your child’s organiser when you have heard them.
