English

We are starting the term by reading the story Knuffle Bunny by Mo Willems. This will become a stimulus for our own writing. We will continue to learn to spell and understand the meanings of the Y1 and Y2CEW words. In phonics, Year 2 will also be learning about homophones.

Maths

Year 1

Our learning focus is 2D and 3D shapes. We will be sorting them into groups based on the number of sides, vertices and faces. As the term progresses, we will move onto the composition of numbers 6-10.

Year 2

Our learning is focusing on multiplication and division. We will be using concrete objects, pictorial representations and mental strategies to solve a range of multiplication and division-based problems. Through working in small steps, we are using known facts to increase our fluency.

Science

Our science focus is ‘Everyday Materials’. We will be exploring everyday materials by identifying, grouping and describing them. We will also learn to sort materials such as metal, wood, plastic and glass, recognise what objects are made from, and compare materials using scientific words like hard, soft, waterproof and absorbent. We will explore recycling and reusing of materials too!

Geography

Our Geography learning will support the children to develop their understanding of the local area by studying maps and aerial photographs. We will be identifying human and physical features such as roads, houses, shops and the canal. The children will use their learning to draw simple maps of familiar places, use symbols and a key, follow routes, and confidently use compass directions to describe and locate places.

RE

In RE, the children will learn that Judaism is a world religion. They will be able to name features of a synagogue and understand why it is an important place for Jews. The children will look at special events that are celebrated and what they mean.

PE

We will be focussing on invasion games and net and wall games. The key skills will be hitting a ball and position, as well as working on throwing and catching.

Computing

In computing, we will be learning about instructions – following algorithms to complete tasks so we get the required output.

Art

The children will look at the work of Matisse. We will then learn how to draw and paint, using inspiration from his ideas to create our own works of art.

Reading

In reading, we will be improving our comprehension skills and increasing the children’s reading mileage. We will be encouraging the children to read more and share their favourite books/ authors with the other children in class.

It would be fantastic if you could continue to read regularly with your child and write a brief comment in their organiser.
